The little boy was outside playing when he spotted two worms crawling on the branches of the tree in his backyard. “It is not safe for you here, “ he told the worms. He quickly went to find a jar. When he returned, he was sad to find only one worm, the other had crawled away. “I will save you,” he told the remaining worm and scooped it up into the jar filled with twigs and leaves. “You will be safe now.” He was glad he saved the worm just in time as a storm was coming. He went inside and carefully placed the jar by the window in his room. Each day he watched the worm crawl and eat the leaves. One day the worm was not there, instead he saw a cocoon. He went outside searching for the other worm and found it too had spun a cocoon. It was exposed to the rain and wind and sun each day. The boy worried that it would not be safe like the one in his jar. As the days went on the boy played and watched the two cocoons. The safe one in the jar slowly began to dry up. Maybe there was not enough water, maybe not enough light, maybe not enough room. The cocoon dried up and fell off the twig in the jar. The boy was sad. He went outside to wander around and look for the other cocoon. He found where it had been and it too was gone. There were only fragments left where it had once hung on the branch. He knew it was not safe out here. Just then a beautiful yellow butterfly lightly touched his hand as it flew away.
Matthew 10:39 (The Message)
38-39"If you don't go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don't deserve me. If your first concern is to look after yourself, you'll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you'll find both yourself and me.
