Saturday, we learned in the space of an hour how to cook a meal that really takes much longer to make. It was just me and Bilma the night before, and it took seven hours to prepare and cook the tamales. But she told me later that was because it was just me and her. It goes faster with more people. I find it amazing to have found a meal that really takes a community to make. In Bilma's dining room, she has a large mural on her wall of women making tamales together. It is a great reflection of her culture. Community is built into the meals. I don't speak enough Spanish to ask Bilma heavy questions, and she doesn't know enough English to say much at all. But it didn't matter. We spent seven hours together, laughing and a lot of the time not talking at all. After five hours, one gets kind of tired. But, it was relaxing.
I think we can learn a lot about family and community from our friends from El Salvador, especially when one sees it in their very meals... in the fact that Bilma gave up seven hours of her day yesterday to help me make them for the class today, without even thinking about it, in how they make tamales all the time together.
Tell me what you guys thought of it. We are going to have a community tamale making day on August 30th at 3 pm. Even if you don't like tamales, it is a great space to build friendships. Hope you all can come.
